I am having quite the dilemma: whether to watch the Super Bowl. Now, in the history of my time as a football fan, I have never missed the big game; however, this season, I really don’t care. When the Chargers lost in the playoffs last year, I watched to root for the Bears (and apparently my rooting skills stink because we all know how that turned out.) This year, again, after a devastating loss, it is different. Most Chargers’ fans despise the Patriots. I do. However, I (along with many San Diego fans) despise Eli Manning just as much. Remember the 2004 draft? Apparently ole Archie Manning decided that Eli didn’t want to play for the Bolts, expressing his concern over the Chargers’ inability to win (in other words, he called them losers.) Funny, since then, San Diego has clinched the AFC West title 3 times in that 4-year span. The Giants won the NFC East in 2005, and then were shut out in the Wild Card game against Carolina. In 2004 and 2006 they had .500 and below records. And this season, they were the Wild Card team themselves (doing to the Cowboys what the Patriots did to the Chargers last year.) Now, I’m not disparaging the rest of the Giants in any way. I love Michael Strahan, such a funny personable guy. However, how can anyone expect a San Diego fan to root for Eli? The other half of the catch-22? The Patriots. An egotistical coach and QB and a bunch of dirty players (not ALL mind you, but enough). Which would be the lesser of two evils? I don’t really care, to be honest. I would love to see the Patriots’ perfect season end at the big game. But I would also hate to see Eli get a Super Bowl ring ahead of Philip Rivers. Remember, Rivers, Manning and Ben Roethlisberger were the “big 3″ QBs drafted that year, and Ben already got his ring. Maybe, as a friend suggested, I’ll Tivo it for the commercials.
