AFC Championship Game Update (or Why the Patriots ARE Dirty)

Patriots’ Vince Wilfork has amassed yet another unnecessary roughness fine from the league.  This time, during the AFC Championship game when he grabbed Michael Turner’s face mask.  Although Wilfork did draw a 15-yard penalty during the game, the NFL handed him his 4th fine of the season, bringing his total to $37,500 for the year.

Wilfork was also fined $12,500 for taking out Bills’ QB J.P. Losman’s knee during week 3, causing Losman to miss several games.  A late hit on Dallas’ TE Jason Witten during week 6 drew a $5,000 fine; and a $15,000 fine for poking Giants’ RB Brandon Jacobs in the eye during week 17 (and you know New York will remember that one!

Of course Wilfork will appeal this fine like he has the rest of them (only managing to garner a $2,500 reduction in the hit on Losman.)  What’s the matter?  Can’t take his punishment like a man?  Apparently not, and as he is afraid to appeal before the Super Bowl (for fear of getting suspended prior to the game), he said he’ll wait to bring it up.  What a coward!

The league would be utterly foolish to even listen to his baseless rants as he has already established himself as a “serial” dirty player who uses unsportsmanlike tactics to compensate for his lack of skill and maturity.  So go ahead New England fans…continue to talk trash about the Chargers while idolizing your unsportsmanlike players who publicly display their malice and idiocy.  While San Diego does, in fact, talk a lot, they are not the ones drawing fine after fine after fine for overtly and maliciously injuring other teams’ players or pushing the envelope to see what they can get away with.  Nor do the Chargers have several players in the news continually being brought up in the media as playing dirty unlike the Patriots (Rodney Harrison, Matt Light, Richard Seymour, and Wes Welker for example.)  Remember, kids, if it looks like a duck and walks like a duck.  Note:  Rodney Harrison leads the entire league in fines as a result of unsportsmanlike conduct during his career - $300,000.  And in a brief segue, the restraining order against Randy Moss has been extended until March 28, 2008.

Idolizing a team such as this sure doesn’t say much for the calibre of fan in New England, does it?  The ‘anything to win’ mentality is certainly not role model material for this country’s youth.  When Bill Belichick et. al. are praised and idolized for cheating, lying, etc. it send quite the wrong message to society.  And character does matter; but, apparently, nobody ever told New England that.
