Stadium Update

The Chargers are finished pursuing stadium talks with the city of San Diego due to city attorney Mike Aguirre’s apparent  ‘issues.’  Being an election year, some wonder whether talks may resume since Aguirre has some fierce competition running against him.

According to the Chargers’ Mark Fabiani, the answer is a resounding “No.”  They are continuing to negotiate with the city of Chula Vista (in San Diego County) and the two viable options:  one near the harbor and another further inland with more land but less access.

San Diego does have some fiscal baggage with the Chargers; most notably the whole seat guarantee fiasco during the what I like to call the ‘Ryan Leaf’ years, and yes, the city did spend a ton of money at that time.  However, should no deal be made with the Chargers after the 2008 season, they will be free to seek a new city.  I, for one, as I’m sure many other Chargers fans, would hate to see them leave San Diego (because how dumb would the Birmingham Chargers sound?!)  Fabiani said he doesn’t trust San Diego politics and is continuing his negotiations with Chula Vista.  Another issue is the slip in property values as of late.

A new stadium is an expensive endeavor; however, a good franchise like the Chargers will not only bring fans to games, but they will earn Super Bowl hosting privileges, and everyone knows the incredible amount of money the event brings into the hosting city.  Furthermore, the Chargers want to purchase the stadium and the rights to develop surrounding land similar to what was proposed with Qualcomm Stadium earlier, but they were unable to find any investment partners at that time.
