…Derek Smith! The ex-49er linebacker has agreed to a 2-year deal with the Chargers. GM A.J. Smith was ecstatic after Smith’s release by San Francisco, as he hopes to add another degree of experience to San Diego’s young inside linebacker corps; and Smith can do just that - providing depth behind Stephen Cooper and Matt Wilhelm. He was the 49ers’ leading tackler for 5 straight seasons. He was drafted by the Redskins in 1997, played there for 4 years under Washington’s then-head coach Norv Turner (coincidence?) , then spent the past 7 years in San Francisco.
When notified of his release by 49er coach Mike Nolan and when asked if there’s anything Nolan can do for him, Smith replied, “Yeah … You can call A.J. Smith and Norv Turner in San Diego, because that’s where I want to play.” (Hey Eli Manning, read THIS!!)
Smith is an alumnus of Arizona State University and he and his family reside in San Diego in the offseason, so I’m sure all of the Smiths are happy Derek is a Charger now.

(Smith likes pressuring the Mannings too!!!)

This is a great signing. This is someone who can step in and make an immediate impact on an already great defense. Plus it’s someone who wants to be in San Diego. Welcome aboard Derek!
