And Now a Word from the Waiver Wire

The Chargers waived Lorenzo Neal, Marlon McCree and Shane Olivea this week.  Everyone knew McCree was on the outs after Eric Weddle showed why San Diego used the 37th pick overall in the 2007 draft to get him.  Olivea lost his starting job to Jeromy Clary, and Neal will be entering his 15th season should he decide to keep playing (and if he does, whichever team picks him up will have the honor of one of the BEST fullbacks in the history of the NFL on its roster.)  During Neal’s injury absence this year, backup FB Andrew Pinnock showed his stuff and made a great argument as to why he should be the Chargers’ starter next season.

Backup kicker Dave Raymer, signed after Nate Kaeding fractured his plant leg in the Xmas Eve Denver game will not be given a contract extension.

Michael Turner and Drayton Florence are both free agents and are expected to be leaving the Chargers as well.  Florence was relegated to backup CB after Antonio Cromartie lit up the field and proved his immense value to the San Diego defense.

Injury Updates:

A whopping 11 Chargers have either had or are scheduled for surgery.  Shawne Merriman will have his troublesome knee fixed, as will Jamal Williams (both knees.)  Marcus McNeill is scheduled for shoulder surgery.  Antonio Gates decided to go through with his toe surgery (and a 4-6 month rehab period), and I’ve been keeping you all abreast of the Philip Rivers situation.  My knee is coming along very slowly, in case anyone was wondering.

Lo Neal

(I, for one, will miss you Neal.)
