Other News…

Restricted free agent (and roundoff-backflip king) LB Marques Harris and exclusive rights free agent CB Cletis Gordon have both signed 1-year contracts through the end of the 2008-9 season.  Both players made significant contributions to the success of the Chargers last season.

NFL owners did, in fact, vote last Tuesday to allow one defensive player to wear a wired helmet, similar to that of the quarterback.  Chargers defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell is very happy about the 25-7 decision in favor of the rule change, as it makes calling defensive plays much easier for coordinators and prevents the likes of the Bill Belichicks out there to illegally videotape defensive signals (and NO, I am not nor will be “over this issue” anytime soon!)

Tackle Jeromey Clary received a nice little bonus in his paycheck this week thanks to the NFL’s “Performance-Based Pay” system which offers financial incentives for lower-salaried players who have played well.  The money is in a community fund established in 2002 by the league to address both salary cap and player performance issues.  Way to go Clary!!  Keep up the good work!!

WR Kassim Osgood is one of 12 players honored with a “JB Award” selected by James Brown and the NFL Players Association for his community contributions.  Great job Osgood!!

LB stud Shawne Merriman will be one of 9 celebrity judges for the 2008 Miss USA Pageant.  While, personally, I don’t care about beauty pageants, I have been waiting for some sort of Merriman-in-the-news story to post this fabulous picture of him.

The Chargers also have been awarded an additional compensatory 5th round draft pick (166th overall) as a result of losing LB Donnie Edwards back to Kansas City.  As you can see, GM A.J. Smith is ecstatic.
