Residual Preseason Week 1 Tidbits - Injuries, Signings, etc.

Stepping in for the minorly-injured Marcus McNeill against the Cowboys last weekend, newly-signed 10-year veteran OT L.J. Shelton proved a great acquisition to an already talent-laden Chargers team.  McNeill’s “stinger” is considered minor, and Shelton proved his worth protecting Philip Rivers’ blind side.

Also sidelined for the preseason thus far are DE Luis Castillo (back) and CB Antonio Cromartie (ankle).  Both injuries appear to minor, mainly soreness, and Norv Turner asserts that the lengthy absences are merely precautionary.  Jacques Cesaire has been more-than-capably filling in for Castillo, much like he did during last season when Castillo was sidelined with a foot injury for several weeks.

That’s the beauty of the Chargers and the visionary skill of GM A.J. Smith.  The depth of talent on this team is, in my highly-biased opinion, unequaled in ANY other team in the NFL.  Yes, even New England (ack, hack, cough, gag!)

WR Vincent Jackson practiced, but has yet to really “cut loose” since his hamstring injury.  Again, it is early in the preseason and while he may play Saturday against the Rams, Jackson should be good to go by Week 1.

Finally, S Eric Weddle has unveiled a new talent…kick holder!  Apparently Weddle performed this function at Utah as well, and should anything happen to Scifres or Kaeding, Weddle would step up.  He already has earned the trust of the Bolts’ kicking corps.
