What the heck is a chanticleer?

With the departure of Lorenzo Neal, the Chargers have a potential fullback controversy a’brewing.  With Andrew Pinnock recovering from offseason knee surgery rookie Mike Tolbert has had the opportunity to strut his stuff in the preseason, with his activity and contributions likely to be as evident in Saturday’s game against the Rams as they were last week vs. Dallas; where he rushed for a 1-yd TD as well as ’escorting’ Jacob Hester into the endzone as well. The 5′9″, 243 lb FB from Coastal Carolina University is, according to Norv Turner a physical compact player who can get “under guys’ pads.”  Tolbert had the opportunity to play at other, larger schools such as Georgia Tech, Ole Miss and Rutgers, but his 3.3 G.P.A. wasn’t high enough for those schools (remember, kids, stay in school and study hard!!!)  He was happy he attended Coastal Carolina, claiming that it felt perfect for him and he was glad he got to play there.

In fact, Tolbert is the first Chanticleer (some sort of rooster) RB to make the roster of an NFL team and is also the first alumnus to make the roster of a playoff team.

Tolbert is no stranger to either a strong work ethic or a challenge.  Having been told he was undersized to be a linebacker in high school, he made All-American.  Similarly, in college he was regarded as too small to be a fullback, (Pinnock is 5′10″, 250 lbs) as current criticisms abound, but such skepticism doesn’t faze him at all.  He says, “I’m going to bust my tail harder than anyone else.”

A Chanticleer is the most feared Rooster in the barnyard…so beware of Mike Tolbert. We have watched Mike during his Coastal years and he always leaves you wanting more. Good luck Mike we wish you all the best.

Mike Tolbert is originally from Douglasville, Ga. He went to Coastal Carolina where he played fullback. I personally know his mother and work with his aunt( she’s a Chemist and is a part of my group).

At work, we all have been keeping up with him and naturally very proud he made the team. I told his aunt early on the although Mike was undrafted that he went to the right team and would have a real good shot to make it.

I am very proud of Mike and wish him a good and safe career in the NFL. He is really a very good kid!!
