Huge concerns over Merriman’s knee

LB Shawne Merriman reports that he has a torn ligament in his surgically-repaired right knee.  He has gotten medical opinions in both Alabama and Florida and has recently returned to San Diego.  He can choose to have season-ending reconstructive surgery now, undergo minor surgery to get him through the season, or do nothing.  Merriman says he wants to play, that sitting out would drive him crazy; and the Chargers believe he’ll be ready to play in the season opener against Carolina on 9/7.

It’s not like the Chargers don’t have serious depth on defense (Jyles Tucker anyone?)  When Merriman sat out his 4-game suspension 2 years ago, the Chargers went 4-0.  Additionally, when Merriman missed a few games last season, the Chargers backups were outstanding.

In any case, it is ultimately Merriman’s decision.  If he decides to play, I hope he doesn’t cause irreparable damage to his knee.

One of the bests LBs in the league, Merriman has 39.5 sacks thus far in his career.
