Big UGH!

Shawne Merriman has now reported in addition to his torn PCL, he also has a torn LCL and could face a “career-ending injury” if he chooses to play.  He will be going back to Miami for another medical consultation as to whether he will have season-ending surgery.  What a tough break.  I know, as a Chargers fan, I want to see Merriman play; however, it certainly is not worth risking his career to sit out a year.  The Chargers have tremendous defensive depth, and at linebacker, there are so many talented guys who can easily step up and help the team.

Of course, the team wants him to play, with Norv Turner vocally expressing his confidence that Merriman will, in fact, play this season.  He says Merriman is getting ready for the season opener vs. Carolina.  Personally, I think that Turner is being a bit negligent.  It’s not his decision, and by putting his views so “out there” in the public eye, he may be influencing Merriman’s decision a bit, albeit subconsciously.  That needs to stop.  I believe Merriman needs to make the best decision for him, and the Chargers will respect that.

Whatever he decides, I hope everything works out well for him and the team.
