LB Shawne Merriman has decided to forego surgery for his torn PCL and LCL in his left knee and play this season. After visiting with 5 orthopaedists around the country and being told that reconstructive surgery would sideline him for the season, Merriman will be playing.
Coach Norv Turner has been repeatedly stating (in the media, no less) that he’s confident Merriman will play; a tactic which, in my opinion, was negligent. Granted, while I’m sure Merriman really does want to play, I believe he is not looking at the big picture. Any additional injury to the knee could result in a career-ending injury, not just season-ending. And with the rapidly-increasing level of aggression witnessed in the NFL as of late (look at all the season-ending injuries this year ALONE, and it’s still preseason!) who’s to guarantee that some overly-aggressive player (or coach) won’t specifically target Merriman’s knee to get him out of the game.
Part of the problem is Merriman’s contract. Being the final year of his original rookie contract, he has the potential to earn the final $1.55 million in “escalator bonuses” should he make the Pro Bowl again.
All I can offer (aside from a maternal scolding which my kids attempt to ignore) is that I truly hope that he doesn’t suffer additional injury to his knee which would end his career.
