Chargers 20, 49ers 17.
Sorry for the delay folks. Living in AZ now, I had to wait until Saturday NIGHT to actually watch the game, being forced, instead, to suffer through the Cardinals/Broncos game and the unending drama of Matt Leinart, aka Ryan Leaf, Jr. Since Kurt Warner was named Arizona’s starter, I’m sure there will be oodles of media as a result.
But I digress.
The Chargers uber-fantastic defense, again, showed its turnover-getting prowess, collectively intercepting San Fran’s QBs 4 (count em, 4) times; twice by rookie Tra Battle and twice by Cletis Gordon.
Both Billy Volek and Charlie Whitehurst looked great, with each tossing a TD: Volek to youngster FB Mike Tolbert and Whitehurst to youngster RB Eldra Buckley for the game-winning, one-armed diving TD with 29 seconds left (reminiscent of Jacob Hester’s last second TD vs. the Rams last week for the win.)
I won’t mention the fumbles, as both teams were unusually fumble-happy with each team committing/forcing 2.
The penalties were moderately high, with the Chargers’ 7-59 yds surely not pleasing Norv Turner.
The Chargers made San Fran’s QBs Alex Smith and Shaun Hill look so bad that J.T. O’Sullivan earned the club’s starting positiong. Wow, QB controversies abound.
Next week starts the regular season, with San Diego hosting the Carolina Panthers, and I will be there!!!!!!! So, once again, a slightly delayed postgame report which, hopefully, will be a W.

(Volek & Whitehurst)
