Chargers 28, Raiders 18
I have to admit, I was pretty worried at halftime with the Bolts trailing 15-0. HOWEVER, once again, the 2nd half is, in fact, the Chargers’ half.
First of all, let me be the first to say, “See ya Kiffin” cuz you know that Al Davis is firing his arse tomorrow!
Now on to the game:
LaDainian Tomlinson, after a pretty weak first half, managed, once again to score 2 TDs on 106 yds. Darren Sproles had some awesome returns, but his highlight was the 2-pt conversion to give the Chargers their first lead (18-15) in the 3rd quarter.
Philip Rivers was certainly not his usual explosive self, but hey, that’s ok….he got the W on 14/25, 180 yds, 1 TD, and 2 INTs. The rest of the offense was mediocre at best. Vincent Jackson had a pair of phenomenal catches, but also dropped 2. Chris Chambers was held in check with only 42 yds. And Antonio Gates managed only 58 yds, but did catch the TD pass from Rivers.
The defense finally stepped up with 6 sacks, 1 INT, and 1 forced fumble (WTG Castillo, Dobbins, Tucker, Williams, Harris, Phillips, and Bingham.) Eric Weddle led the D today with 7 big tackles. Antonio Cromartie seemed, once again, to be the referees’ scapegoat drawing several flags, some of which were legitimate but others a bit questionable. (But at least Ed Hochuli wasn’t there.) Quentin Jammer had a few nice plays himself as well.
Nate Kaeding uncharacteristically missed 2 FGs (a blocked 44-yarder and a wide 47-yarder.) Sebastian Janikowski missed one himself….a 76-yarder (yes, you read it right - on the last play of the first half. Dream on Kiffin, LOL.)
Penalties hurt the Raiders as well, but come on, is anyone surprised at that? While the Chargers were flagged 3 times for 15 yds, Oakland amassed 8 penalties for a whopping 64 yds.
San Diego has now beaten Oakland in 10 consecutive meetings, tying Pittsburgh’s domination of the Browns.
Despite having to listen to Phil Simms for 3+ hours, he did have one intelligent utterance….that the Chargers should use Sproles more throughout the game than just as a 3rd down back and on special teams. I concur.
The Chargers travel to Miami next week; a team which really has no defense so we should see a resurgence of the “electric, high-powered” Bolt offense. Note to the D: keep an eye on Ronnie Brown. ‘Nuff said.
Also: A big WTG to the Kansas City Chiefs for manhandling the “mighty” Broncos, 33-19. Denver hosts the Buccaneers who beat Green Bay today, while the Chiefs go to Carolina who annihilated Michael Turner and the Falcons earlier (bad news for the Chiefs’ running game.)
