Big, unexpected defensive changes

Last Wednesday, the Chargers released veteran SS Clinton Hart and signed DT Ian Scott. The Bolts have been hit hard on defense with injuries, with Jamal Williams’ season-ending tricep tear the most damaging. It is likely that rookie Kevin Ellison–who was alternating time with Hart and rumored to be a threat to his starting position–will [...]

Chargers 17, Cardinals 6
Fun game, great seats!  Check out the pics…
The first string looked great (except for Philip Rivers’ 4 sacks by an impressive Cardinals’ defense.)  Rivers managed 5-7, 116 yds. Actually, Billy Volek looked awesome (I’m still asserting that he play in Pittsburgh!) LaDainian Tomlinson and Darren Sproles played much of the first quarter again [...]

Studly WR Vincent Jackson is on the verge of accomplishing something that no Chargers receiver has done since Curtis Conway in 2001 - a 1,000-yd receiving season.  Currently, Jackson has 940 yds, and only on 50 receptions.  He has managed an impressive 7 catches of 40+ yards this season, tied with Green Bay’s Greg Jennings [...]

Ted Cottrell is worthless.  How does a defensive coordinator take one of the top 3 defenses in the league and reduce them to nothing against the rush and fraught with penalties against the pass?  While I’m on the topic, Norv Turner’s playcalling is very reminiscent of Marty-ball.  First down…run.  Second down…run.  Third and long…obvious pass [...]

Well isn’t this a cheery little factoid:  the Dolphins have beaten the Chargers the past 6 meetings, and lead the series 11-10.  Also, Chad Pennington is 3-0 vs. San Diego (of course, that was with the Jets) and has yet to throw an INT vs. the Bolts (hey Cromartie, Hart, Jammer, Weddle….you listening?!?!)
During their last meeting, 11 [...]

Jamal Williams has returned to practice.

Clinton Hart is loking to up his interception total this season.

The league has eliminated the force-out rule.  Defenders will now have considerably more latitude in pushing sideline receivers out of bounds without provoking the endless litany of instant replay dialogue and never-ending slow motion re-airs of one [...]

Following a successful mini-camp, the Chargers are now participating in their voluntary offseason coaching sessions, or OCS, for the next several weeks, emphasizing techniques and getting ready for official training camp and the upcoming 2008 season (for which I can barely wait!)
Philip Rivers is making phenomenal progress after his ACL reconstruction, while the other post-op [...]

Player Spotlight - Clinton Hart

Here are some interesting factoids about star Safety #42, Clinton Hart.
1.  He was born in Dade City, Florida on July 20, 1977 (a Cancer, like my older daughter!)
2.  He was drafted by the Anaheim Angels (yes, folks….BASEBALL) right out of high school; however, he chose to stay in Florida; playing for Central Florida Community College instead.
3.  He started [...]

Mini Camp Musings

With the 2008 mini camp in the books, the general consensus among the Chargers was that it was a success.  The players enjoyed entertaining the fans, with Antonio Cromartie’s INT of Philip Rivers (keep it up Cro….especially against the Colts and Patriots later this season), Chris Chambers tackling of Cromartie, and Vincent Jackson’s long reception [...]
